The New York Theosophical Society and its Quest Bookshop.

The New York Theosophical Society moved into its present quarters sometime in 1952. It was thought that this would be a prime location since it is within walking distance of the United Nations.

With the help of philanthropist and theosophist John Sellon, the building was purchased and after much renovation, it became the home of the New York Lodge. Meetings were held on Sundays, first with a public meeting and then after enjoying a meal together, the members’ meeting was held.

The bookshop at that time was just a small cart of theosophical titles that was rolled out before and after each meeting for purchasing. Today our members’ meetings are held every other Wednesday at 6 PM. For a small donation, other like-minded groups use our space for their meetings.

Interior  NY Lecture Hall

Our property is one of the few that has a garden in the back of our building. The full, ceiling to floor window at the back of our lecture hall gives a wonderful view of nature in the midst of a bustling city.

In 1976, the building next door to the New York Lodge was up for sale, and again, thanks to help from John Sellon, the building was purchased. This building houses our Quest Bookshop and is a local favorite.

The store

Our motto is “A Peaceful Sanctuary in the Heart of Midtown”. We carry metaphysical books, candles, gemstones, incense, oils, tarot decks and more. We are in a commercial district, and many people come in just to experience the peaceful atmosphere in our shop. We offer lunchtime meditation twice a week.

$5 used books, much in demand

Several years ago, we were contacted by a few metaphysical and theosophical libraries that were either downsizing or closing and offered us their books. Without giving it a second thought, we agreed to take in their books, not realizing that we would soon find ourselves with 195 very large boxes of books. With a strong unwillingness to allow any titles to be tossed, we developed a section of $5 used books in the shop. It has come to be one of our biggest sellers. So many titles that have gone out of print were in those boxes. The economy, being what it is, has made our $5 used book section a big draw, and we are so happy that these titles find a new home.

A rich variety in titles

Our buildings are old, both known as brownstone buildings, built around 1865. Maintenance of these two wonderful premises can be very expensive, but we love the energy that permeates every inch of each building and we work hard keeping things in shape.

Always welcome ...

Lyn Trotman says:

Because we are an  independent bookstore, our staff truly cares about what we sell. If you inquire, you will get an informed and honest opinion, and if we don’t know the answer, we will try to find someone who does. If you need help in finding a book or item to serve your needs, we will assist you with that, as well.
